Happy (almost) two year anniversary to us! We’ve just found out that Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back has gone into several reprints, the most recent being 400 copies last October! It’s such an honour to watch our book-baby journey into the world (and hopefully onto many reading lists)!
When co-editors Sandra and Okka were out of commission last autumn/winter, Daniel took on the task of selecting poets to represent the book in March 2019 at University of Greenwich. We’re thrilled to say that Kuli Kohli, Miss Jacqui and Grant Tarbard did a brilliant job with the students.
Films from the book have recently been screened in Cannes (!), London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Donna Williams’s poem, ‘Bilingual Poet’s Dilemma’, will be screened at Deaffest in Wolverhampton on Sunday, 19th May at 10AM. Congrats, Donna! (And Ania Urbanowska, Sandra’s co-creator on this film!) Access: Wheelchair access, captions, hearing loop. Tickets and more info: https://deaffest.co.uk/sunday-19th-may-2019/
Khairani Barokka will be part of Alice Wong’s Disability Visibility Podcast, discussing SAW and other work, later this year.
Without funding or admin support, our capacity for events remains low. However, we’ll be sure to let you know about future events!
Sandra Alland wrote and recorded a series for Disability Arts Online on criticism of disabled and D/deaf arts, which includes an analysis of all Stairs and Whispers reviews (with input from Okka and a BSL film on D/deaf criticism by contributor Bea Webster!), available at http://disabilityarts.online/projects/disabled-and-deaf-arts-criticism/.
Pull quotes from reviews are at https://britishdisabledpoetry.wordpress.com/what-the-critics-say/.
With best wishes,
Sandra Alland, Khairani Barokka and Daniel Sluman
